The broader contaminant list applies to all private sources: bacteria and viruses from septic waste, naturally occurring chemicals including arsenic and manganese, petroleum products, pesticides and radiation. Testing on a schedule rather than once is the sensible response, because a shallow source changes with the season and the year in a way a deep one does not.

Drought finds the shallow sources first

Vermont does not think of itself as a place with water shortages, which is exactly why the dry years catch people out.
