It is not a cure, and it does measurably reduce the extremes.

Do I need a water softener in Oklahoma?

It depends more than people assume, because hardness varies across the state. Oklahoma City water is reported at around 96 parts per million, which is moderate rather than severe, so a softener there is a smaller win than the marketing suggests. Other communities and private wells run considerably harder and the case is stronger. Test hardness at your own tap before buying equipment. Either way, flush the water heater annually, because sediment on the tank floor sits between the burner and the water and costs efficiency first and tank life eventually.

Why do pipes under my slab develop pinhole leaks when they are not that old?

Because they are being attacked from both sides at once. Hard water scales and corrodes the inside of the pipe, while the soil chemistry around it works on the outside. Add the mechanical stress of clay that moves seasonally and you have pipe failing well before its nominal service life. This is why age alone is a poor predictor of slab leaks in Oklahoma, and why a house that has never had a problem can develop several in a short period once the process reaches the pipe wall.
