The consequences are not dramatic, which is precisely why they go unaddressed. Aerators clog. Showerheads spray sideways. Glassware never quite comes clean. Those are irritations rather than costs.
The actual cost is inside the water heater. Mineral settles out of the hot water and forms a layer of sediment on the bottom of the tank, directly between the burner and the water it is supposed to heat. The burner then runs longer to achieve the same temperature, the tank works harder than it was designed to, and the unit reaches the end of its life years earlier than it should have. For most Iowa households a softener also earns its place, which is not a recommendation worth making everywhere. Test at your own tap before buying, though, because hardness varies between municipal supply and private wells, and a well with iron in it needs different equipment than a well that is merely hard.
Wells, nitrate and the annual test
A large share of Iowa’s land area runs on private wells, and those households are their own water utility whether they think of it that way or not.
The state’s guidance on this is unusually direct: every private well owner should test for nitrate every year. The reason is that nitrate levels in shallow groundwater are not stable. They change from year to year and from season to season with rainfall, recharge and what has happened on the land around the well. A clean result five years ago describes five years ago. Wells shallower than a hundred feet, and wells in karst areas, are the most vulnerable of all.
Karst deserves a plain explanation because it is genuinely different from ordinary geology. It is limestone that groundwater has dissolved into holes and channels, something like swiss cheese, and it is found generally across northeast Iowa. In normal soil, water percolating down is filtered on the way. In karst, water can move quickly through fractures and open channels, so surface contamination reaches the aquifer without that filtering, and the direction groundwater actually travels underground is hard to predict from anything visible at the surface. Two wells a short distance apart can behave completely differently.
The frost line is not the problem
Iowa’s frost line averages around fifty-eight inches, reaching roughly seventy in the north and dropping under forty in the south. That is deep, and it means the buried service line coming into the house is well out of reach of winter.
Homeowners hear that and reasonably relax, and then a pipe freezes anyway. It is never the buried one. It is the run along an exterior wall that loses heat quickly, or the line crossing an unheated basement, or whatever passes through a crawl space, attic or garage. Those sit in unconditioned air through an Iowa January, which is a very different environment from five feet underground.
The timing catches people out too. A frozen pipe frequently releases nothing while the ice is still in it. The flood arrives on the thaw, into a wall cavity or under a floor, which is why the damage and the discovery happen in the same hour.
Flat ground, and where the spring water goes
The last piece is topography. Iowa is flat, and flat ground does not shed water. Heavy spring rain and snowmelt sit rather than drain, and saturated soil presses against basement walls and floors.
Water arriving cleanly around the floor edge and the wall joint is hydrostatic pressure rather than a plumbing failure, and the answer is a sump pump with a backup, because spring storms take the power out at exactly the moment the pump is needed most. Check the discharge line along with the pump. A frozen or blocked discharge lets the pump run flawlessly while the pit overflows regardless, which is the most confusing version of this failure and one of the most common.
