Soft water is not the same as easy water

Ask a plumber in Phoenix or Indianapolis about water problems and you will hear about scale. Ask one in Connecticut and you will hear about copper.

Connecticut has some of the softest water in the United States. The state median hardness is around 52.6 milligrams per litre, about 3.1 grains per gallon, against a USGS threshold of 120 milligrams before water counts as hard at all. Hartford’s supply runs near 15 milligrams per litre, which is very soft by any measure.

The reason is underneath the state. New England sits on crystalline bedrock, granite, gneiss and schist, which hold almost no carbonate minerals for water to dissolve. The glaciers left thin soils on top, so rain and snowmelt run quickly through into rivers and upland reservoirs without spending long in contact with anything that would add calcium or magnesium.

The result is water that tastes clean, does no harm to a water heater and asks nothing of a dishwasher. It is also mildly aggressive toward metal, and over the decades it works on copper from the inside.

The pinhole leak, and the money people waste on it

That aggression shows up in a very particular pattern, and once you know it, it is unmistakable. A small leak appears in a copper line. It gets repaired. Eighteen months later another one appears somewhere else entirely. Then a third.

Homeowners understandably read this as bad luck, or bad workmanship from whoever did the last repair. It is neither. It is water chemistry working evenly across the whole system, so failures appear one at a time in different places rather than all at once in one place.

The important practical point is what not to buy. A water softener removes calcium and magnesium, and Connecticut water has very little of either to remove. Installing one against pinhole leaks is spending money on equipment that has nothing to do. Where the water is also acidic, which is common in this region and especially in wells, the relevant equipment is a neutralising filter that raises pH so the water stops dissolving the pipe. Where corrosion has already gone far enough, repiping the affected runs is what ends it. Either way, a test comes before a purchase.

Both occur naturally in the rock. Neither has any taste, colour or smell, so there is no household clue that would prompt you to look, and uranium ingestion through drinking water has been associated with kidney disease.

Those are statewide occurrence rates from a sample, not a prediction about any particular well. That is precisely why testing rather than assuming is the answer.

Where the water comes from, and the winter that finds the weak points

Hartford’s supply is worth knowing about because it explains the gravity-fed, low-mineral character of what comes out of the tap. The Metropolitan District, chartered in 1929 for the Hartford area, draws mainly on the Barkhamsted and Nepaug reservoirs in the northwest hills, holding roughly 30.3 and 9.5 billion gallons, and water flows downhill from there to treatment in West Hartford and Bloomfield at around 50 million gallons a day. The New Haven region is served separately by a regional authority working from ten reservoirs and three aquifers across fifteen towns.

Winter then tests everything else. Connecticut’s older housing routes pipe through spaces no one would choose today, and the specific local hazard is the nor’easter that takes the power with it. A house without heat for a day or two freezes lines that would comfortably survive an ordinary cold night. Insulating the accessible runs, disconnecting hoses in autumn and confirming that your main shutoff actually turns are all jobs for October rather than January.
