Which element failed, and how you can tell

Most electric heaters have two elements, and the symptom tells you which one has gone.

Lukewarm water throughout points at the upper element or its thermostat. It heats the top of the tank first and, when it fails, nothing gets properly hot.

Normal temperature but it runs out fast points at the lower element. The top of the tank is being heated as usual, but the bulk below it is not, so the supply is a fraction of what it should be.

That distinction is worth mentioning when you call, because it narrows the visit before anyone arrives.

A tripped reset is a symptom

The high-limit cutout is a safety device, and it does not trip for no reason.

It operates when the water in the tank reaches a dangerous temperature, which almost always means a thermostat has failed in a closed position and is no longer switching its element off, or an element has partly shorted.

Pressing the reset restores hot water and leaves the cause in place. It will trip again, and in the meantime the only thing standing between a failed component and scalding water is that switch. Worth diagnosing rather than resetting on a schedule.

    A tripped high-limit cutout is a symptom of something else, usually a failed thermostat, and resetting it without finding out why simply defers the fault.

  4. Consider scale

    In hard water, scale forms directly on the element surfaces and insulates them, which reduces output and eventually burns elements out early.

My water is warm but never hot. Which element is it?

That symptom points at the upper element or its thermostat. In a two-element heater the elements work in sequence, with the upper one heating the top of the tank first. If the lower element fails you tend to get a normal amount of hot water that runs out very quickly, because only the top portion is being heated. If the upper element fails you tend to get lukewarm water throughout. The pattern is a genuinely useful diagnostic.

The reset button keeps tripping. Can I just keep resetting it?

You can, but it is telling you something and it will keep telling you. The high-limit cutout trips when the water gets dangerously hot, which usually means a thermostat has failed and is no longer switching the element off, or an element has partly shorted. Repeatedly resetting a cutout without finding the cause leaves a safety device doing a job that a failed component keeps creating, which is not where you want to be.

Why do my elements keep failing?

In hard water, scale is the usual answer. Minerals deposit directly onto the element surface and act as insulation, so the element runs hotter than it should to transfer the same heat into the water, and it burns out early. Replacing elements without addressing the scale simply repeats the cycle. Flushing the tank on a schedule, and considering treatment where the water is genuinely hard, is what breaks it.
