Do not flush it again

This is the single decision that separates a blocked toilet from a bathroom floor covered in it.

The bowl is holding water because that water has nowhere to go. Another flush adds a full cistern to a pan that is already at capacity, and it goes over the rim.

If the level is rising, lift the cistern lid and push the flapper down by hand to stop water leaving the tank. Or close the small isolation valve on the supply pipe at the wall.

Then deal with the blockage. There is no hurry once nothing more can arrive.

Is it the toilet, or is the toilet just first?

Before reaching for a plunger, check the other fixtures. It decides what kind of job this is.

Only the toilet is affected. The obstruction is in the pan’s own trap, which is where the overwhelming majority sit. A flange plunger or a closet auger reaches it.

The shower gurgles or the sink backs up too. The blockage is downstream of all of them, in a drain those fixtures share. The toilet is showing it first because it discharges the most water in one go. Clearing the pan will change nothing, because the pan is not blocked.

That check takes thirty seconds and it decides whether this is a toilet problem or a drain problem, which are two different visits.

Does this sound familiar?

Problems this service solves

  • A toilet that will not flush away
  • Water rising in the pan instead of draining
  • Repeated blockages in the same toilet
  • An object dropped into the pan
  • A toilet blocking whenever another fixture is used

Signs you need clogged toilet repair

If more than one of these is true, the problem is usually past the point a plunger or a store-bought cleaner will fix.

A technician performing a plumbing inspection
  • The bowl fills and drains slowly or not at all
  • Other drains gurgle when the toilet is flushed
  • The same toilet blocks regularly
  • Something was dropped in and has not come back out

What to expect

How the visit works

  1. Stop flushing

The second flush is what turns a blockage into an overflow. The cistern isolation valve stops water reaching the pan while the cause is dealt with.

  2. Check whether it is only the toilet

If sinks and showers are also slow, the problem is downstream and clearing the toilet will not solve it.

  3. Clear the pan

A flange plunger or a closet auger clears an obstruction in the trap of the pan itself, which is where most single-toilet blockages sit.

  4. Deal with repeats properly

A toilet that blocks regularly has a reason: a low-flow unit on a long run, an object lodged in the trap, or a partial restriction further down.

Questions

Clogged Toilet Repair questions

Should I flush again to clear it?

No, and this is the mistake almost everyone makes. The bowl is already holding the water from the previous flush because it has nowhere to go. Another flush sends a second full cistern into a pan that is already full, and it goes over the rim onto the floor. If the water is rising, lift the cistern lid and push the flapper closed by hand, or turn the isolation valve at the wall, and stop water reaching the pan at all.

My toilet blocks and so does the shower. Is that connected?

Yes, and it changes the diagnosis entirely. A blockage in the toilet itself affects only the toilet. If flushing makes a nearby shower or sink gurgle or back up, the obstruction is downstream where those fixtures share a drain, and the toilet is simply the first place it shows because it moves the most water at once. Clearing the toilet will not help, because the toilet is not what is blocked.

Something got dropped in. Will it flush through?

Sometimes, and that is exactly the problem. Small hard objects, toys, a toothbrush, a bottle cap, often pass out of the pan and lodge in the drain further along, where they catch paper and waste for months until a serious blockage forms. If you know something went in and it has not come back out, it is worth retrieving properly rather than flushing until it disappears from view.
