No filter removes everything
The useful way to think about filtration is that each type has a job, and buying by price or by claim rather than by job is how money gets wasted.
Sediment filters remove particulates: grit, rust, sand. Nothing chemical. Usually first in a chain, protecting what follows.
Activated carbon removes chlorine, taste, odour and many organic compounds. It is why filtered water tastes better. It does little for dissolved minerals, hardness or nitrates.
Reverse osmosis removes the widest range including dissolved solids. It is slow, it wastes water making what it produces, and it strips beneficial minerals too.
Specialist media exist for specific contaminants: iron, sulphur, arsenic and others.
A real water quality problem often needs two of these in sequence rather than one doing everything.
The filter you forget is worse than none
Every cartridge has a rated capacity, and past it the filter does not simply stop working.
Material trapped in a spent cartridge sits directly in the flow path. Carbon that has reached capacity can begin releasing what it captured. A sediment filter loaded to the point of restriction reduces flow to everything downstream.
And none of this is visible. The water looks the same on the day the cartridge expires as it did on the day it was fitted.
Which means the practical specification for a filtration system includes something rarely discussed: how easy it is to change. A housing that is accessible, with a bypass, gets serviced. One that requires shutting the house off and moving furniture does not, and an unserviced filter is not doing what you paid for.

Which filter removes the most?
Reverse osmosis removes the widest range, including dissolved solids that carbon cannot touch, which is why it is used for drinking water where a test has found something specific. The trade-offs are that it is slow, it wastes water producing what it treats, and it removes beneficial minerals along with everything else. That makes it excellent at a kitchen tap and a poor choice for the whole house.
Does a carbon filter remove everything?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. Activated carbon is very good at chlorine, taste, odour and many organic compounds, which is why filtered water tastes noticeably better. It does little for dissolved minerals, hardness, nitrates or most heavy metals. If your concern is taste, carbon is the right and cheap answer. If a test has found something specific, carbon may not touch it.
How do I know if my filter is still working?
By the schedule rather than by the taste, because a filter that has stopped working does not announce it. Cartridges have a rated capacity and beyond it they stop removing and can begin releasing what they have trapped. Keep a note of when each was changed. If nobody knows when a filter was last replaced, it is past due, and changing it is cheaper than testing to find out.
