Stop using water, right now
This is the part homeowners most often get wrong, and it is the part that decides how bad it gets.
When the line is blocked, everything that goes down any drain in the property has to come out somewhere, and it comes out at the lowest opening. A running tap upstairs adds directly to what is rising in the ground floor shower.
So the first instruction on the call is to stop: no taps, no flushing, no washing machine, no dishwasher. Then keep people and pets away from anything that has come up, because standing waste water is a health hazard rather than a mess.
One fixture, or all of them
This tells you whether it is urgent and what equipment is needed.
One slow or blocked fixture, with everything else draining normally, is a local blockage in that fixture’s own waste. It is annoying, it is cheap to clear, and it will keep until morning.
Several fixtures at once, the lowest ones going first, or a toilet bubbling when the washing machine drains, means the shared line downstream. That is the one where waste water ends up inside the property, and it is worth calling about tonight.
Mention the weather too. A backup that only happens during heavy rain points at water getting into the system rather than at a blockage in your line, and that is a different diagnosis with a different fix.
Does this sound familiar?
Problems this service solves
- Waste water rising into a shower, bath or floor drain
- Every drain in the house running slowly at once
- A blockage in a property that cannot be left overnight
- A kitchen drain that has stopped completely in a working business
- A toilet that will not clear and is the only one available
- Backing up that started during heavy rain
Signs you need emergency drain cleaning
If more than one of these is true, the problem is usually past the point a plunger or a store-bought cleaner will fix.

- Water rises in one fixture when you run another
- The lowest drains in the property are affected first
- Gurgling from a toilet when the washing machine drains
- Waste water is coming up rather than going down
- Plunging and cleaners have made no difference
What to expect
How the visit works
Stop adding water
Before anything else you are told to stop using every drain in the property, because in a blocked system everything that goes down has to come out somewhere.
Find where it is blocked
One fixture points at a local blockage. Several at once, or the lowest fixtures first, points at the main line, and those need different equipment.
Clear it
A cable machine breaks the blockage and restores flow. Where the cause is grease or scale along the pipe wall, jetting removes it properly instead of boring a hole through it.
Find out why
If a line has blocked repeatedly, a camera goes in. Roots, an offset joint, a belly and a collapse all cause recurring blockages and cleaning fixes none of them.
What's included
What you get on every job, whoever we send.

- Immediate guidance to stop the backup getting worse
- The right machine for the line rather than whatever is on the van
- A camera run when the blockage is a repeat, not a first
- An honest answer about whether cleaning is a fix or a postponement
Questions
Emergency Drain Cleaning questions
My drains are backing up. What should I stop doing?
Everything that uses water. Do not run taps, do not flush, do not run the washing machine or dishwasher. In a house with a blocked line, every gallon that goes down any drain has to come out somewhere, and it comes out at the lowest opening, usually a ground floor shower or a floor drain. Keep people and pets away from standing waste water, because it is a genuine health hazard rather than just unpleasant.
Is one blocked drain an emergency?
Usually not, if the rest of the drains work normally. That is a local blockage in that fixture's own waste and it can generally wait for ordinary hours at ordinary rates. It becomes urgent when several fixtures are affected at once, when the lowest drains are backing up, or when waste water is entering the property, because those indicate the shared line rather than one trap.
Should I use a chemical drain cleaner first?
Generally not, and it can make the visit worse. Caustic cleaners work on hair and soap in a partly open line, but in a fully blocked one the chemical just sits in the pipe, and whoever opens the trap afterwards is dealing with it. In older pipe they are a poor idea for another reason: they generate heat and can damage old pipe, seals and the remaining wall of a corroded line.
Why does my drain block again a few weeks after being cleared?
Because the pipe has a defect rather than a build-up. Clearing restores flow but changes nothing about the pipe, so if the cause is roots through an open joint, an offset where two sections no longer line up, or a bellied section holding standing water, the same spot fills again. That pattern is the reason to put a camera down the line rather than paying for a third cleaning.
