A good pump defeated by a frozen pipe
Here is the failure that catches out more Michigan homeowners than any other, and it is worth understanding because the pump is usually innocent.
A sump pump lifts water out of the pit and pushes it along a discharge line to somewhere outside the building. That line runs above ground or shallowly buried, exposed to the weather.
In a hard freeze, it blocks with ice. Usually at the far end, where the outlet sits in a snow bank, or in a section that holds a little residual water after each cycle.
The pump does not know that. The pit fills, the float rises, the pump starts, and it pushes against a closed pipe. It moves nothing. It either cycles endlessly or overheats and trips.
Meanwhile the basement takes water, and every symptom says the pump has failed, because it sounds exactly like a pump that is working.
Three cheap things that prevent it
None of these require new equipment and together they remove most of the risk.
Give the discharge a consistent fall. A line that slopes properly drains itself after every cycle, so there is nothing sitting in it to freeze. A line with a dip holds water at that dip, and that is where the ice plug forms.
Keep the outlet clear. The most common blockage point is simply the end of the pipe, buried in a snow bank or iced over. It takes a minute to check after a heavy snow, and almost nobody does.
Fit a relief opening nearer the house. If the outside run does freeze, the pump needs somewhere to send water rather than dead-heading against ice. A relief or emergency outlet close to the building gives it one, and it means the worst case is water discharging awkwardly outside rather than water back in the basement.
Test it before the season, not during
A sump pump sits idle for long stretches and then has to perform during the worst weather of the year. That is a bad combination, and the only way to find out whether it will work is to make it work.
Fill the pit with a hose until the float rises and watch a complete cycle. The float should rise freely without catching on the pit wall, the power lead or the discharge pipe. The pump should start. The level should drop quickly. And it should shut off cleanly rather than restarting immediately.
That single test exercises the switch, the motor, the impeller, the check valve and the discharge line together.
And if the basement is finished, consider a backup. The storms and thaws that overwhelm a sump system are frequently accompanied by power cuts, so a single mains-powered pump is protection most likely to be unavailable exactly when it is needed.
Spring water is usually a gutter problem
When a basement takes water in spring, the instinct is to treat it as groundwater rising. Often it is not.
A thaw releases a very large volume of water over a short period, and if the ground slopes toward the house, if downpipes discharge beside the foundation, or if gutters are blocked and overflowing at the wall, that meltwater is being delivered exactly where you least want it.
Those fixes are outside, and they are cheaper and more effective than anything done from inside.
