Arriving water or rising water

Arriving water is surface water being delivered to the foundation: roof discharge, runoff, ground that slopes the wrong way. It shows up during and shortly after rain.

Rising water is groundwater coming up through or under the floor. It is less tied to individual rain events and more to prolonged wet periods.

The test is straightforward and free. Go outside during heavy rain and watch. If a downpipe is putting an entire roof’s worth of water within a foot or two of the wall, that is a very large volume arriving in the worst possible place, and extending it to discharge well clear is an afternoon’s work.
